Fruits Unlimited was borne out of this collaboration and there’s been no looking back since then. The company has continually sought to improve its offerings and supplies Spinneys with a variety of plums and apricots. In keeping with its mantra of exporting only the finest quality fruits, Fruits Unlimited has been actively involved in breeding programmes to ensure that it offers flavourful produce along with several interspecific varieties.
The company’s stone fruit production is concentrated in the beautiful winelands of the Western Cape. Over the past few years, Fruits Unlimited has worked with Zaiger Genetics in California to plant new fruit trees, many of which are Zaiger varieties, known for their unparalleled flavour. Many of these varieties were planted at Boschendal Estate, one of the oldest farms in the Western Cape region. Boschendal believes in giving back to the environment and community it has benefitted from. Hence, sustainable practices have been implemented at the farm – from clearing the land of invasive species such as Eucalyptus, which drains the groundwater table, to restoring soil quality by composting and limiting the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
The estate has also created jobs for hundreds of people from the local community thereby reducing unemployment. Fruits Unlimited ensures that all the growers it works with are certified in accordance with the industry’s highest standards. Packaging is another area the company has taken great pains over in order to maintain quality and increase shelf life of its produce. Its teams have worked tirelessly to design packaging that reduces the movement of fruit during transit as well as retards the ripening process to maintain flavour and nutritional value.
