Dried mango and white chocolate hagelslag

2 slices spinneysFOOD Energy Bread
1 x 90g white chocolate bar
2 tbsp cream cheese
100g dried mango, chopped

Banana-coconut hagelslag

2 slices spinneysFOOD Energy bread
20g desiccated coconut
¼ tsp yellow food colouring
¼ tsp blue food colouring
¼ tsp pink food colouring
1 banana
1 tbsp spinneysFOOD Icing Sugar

Nutty granola hagelslag

2 slices spinneysFOOD Energy Bread
2 tbsp spinneysFOOD Almond Butter
4 tbsp spinneysFOOD Vanilla Granola with Berries, roughly chopped


  • For the Dried Mango and White Chocolate Hagelslag

    Toast the bread

    Blitz the white chocolate in a food processor until it resembles even-sized chunks

  • 3

    Spread the cream cheese on the toast and top with the white chocolate and mango pieces

  • For the Banana-Coconut Hagelslag

    Toast the bread

    Divide the desiccated coconut equally between 3 bowls. Add yellow food colouring to one, blue to the second and pink to the last. Stir to coat the coconut evenly and set aside

    Mash up the banana using a fork and spread it over the bread

    Combine the 3 colours of coconut in one bowl with the icing sugar and mix well

    Sprinkle the coconut mix over the bread topped with banana

    Serve immediately

  • For the Nutty Granola Hagelslag

    Toast both slices of bread evenly

  • 2

    Spread a generous layer of almond butter on each slice

  • 3

    Top with the roughly chopped granola


Similar to sprinkles, hagelslag, which means ‘hailstorm’ was invented in 1919. During the first few years, anise was the only flavour available. Nowadays, you can buy chocolate, raspberry, lemon and orange among many other varieties. It’s estimated that 14 million kilogrammes of this confectionary is consumed every year in the Netherlands.
