Quick, easy and super-versatile tomato sauce

Makes: 4 portions Prepare & Cook:


  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
  • ½ tsp caster sugar, or to taste
  • 4-6 fresh basil leaves or ½ tsp dried basil


  1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes until it starts to turn a pale golden colour.
  2. Add the tomatoes, caster sugar and basil. Season and bring to the boil. Stir well, reduce the heat and cover with a lid. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 25-30 minutes.
