JA The Resort

A firm family favourite, this staycation destination might only be half an hour from the centre of Dubai, but it feels like a real retreat. Stay in Palm Tree Court in a ground floor suite and you’ll open your doors to lush lawns, lofty palms and a beautiful beach – I posted a photo on Instagram during a recent trip and was asked if we were in the Seychelles! There’s a choice of swimming pools, including a shaded baby pool, and activities include watersports, mini golf, a play area and our favourite, riding stables, where the resident Shetland pony Honey can take little ones out for a stroll around the grounds. For food, head to the beachside pizzeria, where wood-fired margheritas will keep everyone happy and well fed. For the grown-ups – if you can find the time – there’s a nine-hole golf course and a spa, while the White Orchid restaurant is a great date-night dining option.

Jumeirah Beach Hotel

Following a recent refurbishment, Jumeirah Beach Hotel is well worth a visit for families, with a brand-new kids’ club the star of the show. Expect movie nights, plenty of things to climb and places to explore, face painting, sports and crafts. Babysitting services are also available, should you need some peace by the pool or a nice dinner out. Plus, all guests get access to Wild Wadi included, so you can get your fill of 30 rides and slides during your stay – guaranteed to tire everyone out. The expanse of beach is gorgeous, but best of all is the ease with which you can enjoy the whole resort. This convenience is what makes the hotel deserving of your dirhams, even if you only live 10 minutes down the road. Staff are friendly and welcoming; they’re used to accommodating children of all ages, and little touches like kid-friendly food at the buffets make it all a pleasure.

Atlantis The Palm

While it might not be my top choice for a child-free break, Atlantis is a sure-fire winner for families. From pizza-making to the waterpark, the aquarium to the kids’ club, the little ones will be busy from the time they wake up until they crash out. Bread Street Kitchen has a fantastic brunch where, during the cooler months, children can enjoy crafts and a bouncy castle outside, and the calm waters off the shore are perfect for little swimmers. Hungry? The new Wavehouse restaurant has a bowling alley, soft play area and even wave machine, while Ronda Locatelli is fab for pizzas. Be sure to get to breakfast early, as it gets hectic, then go straight to Aquaventure, where the new splash area has ankle-deep water, so toddlers can enjoy.
