We know that the vast majority of wastage happens on the farm (over 30 per cent) and in our homes (over 40 per cent), so to this end we source from farmers and growers who share our passion for sustainability. Our international fruit and vegetable suppliers are members of GLOBALG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practice), who carefully manage both food wastage and their environmental impact. We are the only retail members of GLOBALG.A.P. in the Middle East. We are also one of the founding retail partners of the UAE Food Bank and actively support it.
Usually, aesthetically imperfect products never make it onto supermarket shelves, but we have introduced a Naturally I’mperfect range of vegetables to support local growers and prevent edible food from being discarded.
Quality vs Quantity
We make our pre-prepared meals and salads in small batches throughout the day to ensure that wastage is kept to an absolute minimum. We also try to support our customers by having loose vegetables available, and smaller pack sizes.
Our meat is stored and displayed in packaging that is specifically designed to preserve and prolong the shelf-life of our meat cuts. This allows our customers to have more time to use them at home.
We have invested heavily in high-tech systems for ordering and replenishment (sourcing and stocking what we know we can sell) and logistics (ensuring food is transported correctly and stored at the correct temperature).
Consumers tend to throw away edible food because they’ve bought too much or have prepared meals that are too large.
