It’s not Halloween without pumpkins, whether you need them for carving jack-o’-lanterns, making pies, roasting them for warm winter salads or popping them into spiced lattes. And with many of us focusing on buying local whenever possible, nothing beats the fact that this season’s spooky squashes at Spinneys have been grown and sourced for you from just down the road.
Yes, you read that correctly. We recently partnered with Elite Agro, one of the leading producers in the UAE, which already supplies us with the likes of tomatoes, aubergines and bell peppers, to work on this pioneering project. Based in Al Ain, the company is known for its European-standard farming methods, advanced technology and environmentally friendly approach.
Our pumpkins were planted in a greenhouse in July. And it may come as a surprise to know that growing gourds in the desert’s harsh summer conditions is not as problematic as you may think. Judging from the crop Elite Agro has cultivated for us, the plants really seemed to like it!
